Prime Power vs Standby Power
Understanding the difference between Prime Power and Standby Power is essential for correct diesel generator selection.
Standby Power
Maximum power available during emergency grid outage. Limited to approximately 200 hours per year. Generator should not exceed 80% loading in this mode.
Prime Power
Continuous power with no time limitation. Typically 10-15% lower than Standby Power. Used when generator is the primary power source (no grid access).
Continuous Power
Similar to Prime Power but with constant load. Used for applications like water pumping or HVAC systems with uniform load.
