Diesel Generator Derating
Derating refers to the reduction in generator output power due to adverse environmental conditions.
Altitude Effect
As altitude increases, air density decreases. Diesel engines need air for combustion, and thinner air reduces combustion efficiency. Typically 3-5% power reduction per 300m above 1000m altitude.
Temperature Effect
High ambient temperature also reduces air density and increases engine temperature. Typically 2-3% power reduction per 5°C above 25°C.
Solutions
1. Choose generator with higher capacity (20-30% more than actual need)
2. Use turbocharger (in larger models)
3. Use intercooler for compressed air cooling
4. Install in well-ventilated location
